For most of the people Bangkok it’s a busy city, too big, so crowded but, it’s also home of some great local and socially responsible shops and restaurants. In our trip, we try to do support and help the local community so, check these ethical eateries in Bangkok if you want to do the same.
Of course, if you go to Bangkok you will see a variety of cuisines, you will have street food, restaurants with traditional Thai food or even international food. You will have an infinity of places to go hide in every corner or alley that you pass.
But if you really want something with a propose, something that you know that worth the money just go to one of these 5 ethical eateries and see for yourself.
Farm to table café & Farm to table hideout
This place is located in the Sathon district. It’s open every day from 10:00 am to 20:00 pm.
The owners are two lovely sisters from Chiang Rai. The sisters use organic ingredients in the menu, that are from their very own farms. So the name of this place actually speak for itself, directly from farm to your table, they serve a wide range of products.
This place is so good because the sisters created a balance between an old agricultural lifestyle and a modern enthusiasm for organic food, all of this is the middle of the city. It’s one of our favourites ethical eateries in Bangkok.
A worth tip: you must try the homemade ice cream.
Antique café & cakes
In the middle of Bangkok, you can find this great place to take a break and enjoy iced chocolate, a caramel macchiato or a soy milk latte. The coffee is all locally grown in Thailand.
Located in Sukhumvit area they work as a shop too. Here you can find a handful of fair trade handicrafts from local artists. A good concept by supporting the work of artists and also a coffee shop.
A cosy and simple place that you don’t want to miss out in Bangkok. It’s all about giving back. I’m sure you will love their handicrafts and end up buying something to bring back home.
City light coffee
The motto here is ‘coffee with a connection’. All of their coffee is from locally-sourced beans and fair trade. Just for this, this is an amazing place to go but, they also have a homemade pastry and comfortable chairs making of it one of the best ethical eateries in Bangkok.
The convenient location is another plus, just across the street from Rajah Hotel in Sukhumvit Soi. They are open every day from 7:30 am to 9:30 pm except Saturdays from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm. They close on Sunday.
You should definitely spend your money here because, they are a social enterprise of Night Light International, which helps trafficked sex workers get out of the industry.
Did I mention they have some unique drinks? They call it City Light Creations and they are so delicious.
Cabbages & Condoms
You can find this place in Khlong Toei district, open every day from 11:00 am to 22:00 pm. This is one of the oldest social business in Bangkok.
The quirky name it’s to highlight a serious issue. The money you spend on your meal here is used to support their partner non-profit, The Population and Community Development Association in development programs.
The restaurant slogan is ‘our food won’t make you pregnant’. Certainly, not a usual tagline to see but, it definitely gets the attention of the people.
Cabbage & Condoms was founded by an ex-politician and philanthropist who decide it was time to talk issues like sexual health, anti-corruption and sustainability. All these social issues have talked in a fun and irreverent way.
This place tends to get very busy but, you don’t need to book in advance, there’s outside seating if you want to enjoy the view.
Help Live Coffee
Help Live is much more than just a coffee shop. They are an organisation that provides education, healthcare and housing to disadvantaged children of the Karen ethnic group.
The organisation work majority at the Thai and Myanmar border, supporting an orphanage in this region. The main goals of this project are that with this opportunity children can start their own business, sustain themselves and support their communities in the future.
In order to do this, they open coffee kiosks. They are located in the Silom area and Chong Nonsi BTS Station, you can stop by from 6:00 am to 2:00 pm, Monday to Friday. An additional kiosk located near the flower market (Pak Khlong Talad) is open daily from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm.
This is a good opportunity to help a cause and you even don’t have to spend much, the coffee is really cheap and tasty.
Why you should eat at Ethical Eateries in Bangkok
In fact, you should eat at ethical eateries everywhere not only in Bangkok. Sometimes big cities like Bangkok can’t be easy. But, as a traveller, you have an important role to play. It’s your duty to help local communities and it is so simple. When you are supporting these social businesses you are giving back to the local community, only by eaten and drinking at these places.
So even if you don’t have the time to volunteer or the funds to donate to local non-profits, you will still need to eat, these ethical eateries in Bangkok are perfect. Please do it in some of these places and make a difference in helping and supporting small business and communities.
